The Compton Conservatory of Music began in the early 2000’s when several music teachers active and retired, a few friends and fellow musicians witnessed the downsizing of the music programs in the State of California and in particular the Compton Unified School District due to budget cuts. Realizing the joy and power that instrumental music brought the collection of music teachers, friends and fellow musicians during their generation past and present, they recognized that a meaningful music program was a problem that needed to be addressed. After several meetings and discussing their concerns, they became an organized committee focused on keeping instrumental music alive in the hearts and minds of future musicians from elementary to high school. It was from that frame of thinking that the small committee formed in 2004, The Compton Conservatory of Music and established it at the historical Compton High School inside the marching band and choir room, under the guidance of The Southeast Symphony until they established their own non-profit status in 2011.
Over the years, The CCoM has served as a supplemental program for the local school music programs and not a replacement, By adopting a philosophy of inclusion to allow all students with a variety of abilities and/or disabilities to become successful participants in a rich instrumental music program, The Compton Conservatory of Music grew into what it is today. Classes are kept small and intimate to ensure that all children receive the attention they deserve. Teachers at the Conservatory are some of the finest musicians, highly qualified music instructors, some with post graduate degrees and others from the Bellflower Symphony Orchestra.
Recently in 2022, the board of directors motioned to add a voice ensemble department to expand their music program to singing musicians.
With more plans on the horizon, the goal of The Compton Conservatory of Music is to transform our Compton community with little to no access to private music lessons to one that is bursting with opportunities by making instrumental music and voice lessons available to any student who has the desire to learn and excel beyond their potential.
